This opportunity is being offered by National Aerospace Solutions, the team selected by the U.S. Air Force to conduct Test and Operations Sustainment at the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC), Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee.  AEDC operates more than 55 aerodynamic and propulsion wind tunnels, rocket and turbine engine test cells, space environmental chambers, arc heaters, ballistic ranges and other specialized units located in six states. Many of the complex's test units have capabilities unmatched elsewhere in the United States; some are unique in the world. AEDC is one of three installations which are part of the Air Force Test Center (AFTC), one of six subordinate commands of the Air Force Materiel Command organization and an important national resource.
AEDC’s mission is to conduct developmental test and evaluation for the Nation through modeling, simulation, ground and flight test.  Execution of the mission requires a large team of highly qualified and dedicated professionals from multiple technical disciplines to effectively accomplish the objectives of our test customers.
Job Summary
Exciting career opportunities currently exist for entry level Mechanical Engineers in roles within mechanical systems engineering in our Engine Test Facilities Plant group. While these positions have some office work involved, the majority of the engineer’s time is spent in the field or plant area working with our skilled craft workforce. This position may require some amount of shift work to support testing as test load demands.  Engineers who enjoy this type of work typically have some interest or experience with mechanical systems such as engines, compressors, pumps, gearboxes, etc. which may come from working on automobiles, farm equipment, or other machinery. We do not design or build airplanes, engines, or rockets. We operate and maintain the vast equipment required to reliably provide the test conditions required for ground testing.
Job Duties
System Engineers Under the guidance and supervision of a more senior engineer, oversee installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of major equipment such as large motors, refrigeration systems, compressors, heaters, dryers, etc. that provide test conditions to the test facilities to ensure equipment is installed and functioning according to specifications.
Some specific tasks associated with this type of work include (this is not an exhaustive list):
  • Evaluate mechanical, thermal, and electromechanical systems by applying principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, hydraulics, pneumatics, heat transfer, and materials of construction.
  • Work with reliability engineers to develop maintenance schedules based on condition and health of equipment and ensure supply of materials required to maintain equipment is available when needed to prevent equipment failures.
  • Perform root cause failure analyses and other equipment performance analyses when systems or processes fail and recommend remedial actions.
  • Develop, document, and complete maintenance procedures, mechanical systems operating procedures, sequence of operations, advanced troubleshooting, system optimization, and energy conservation.
Basic Qualifications
  • B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited engineering college or university with 0-3 years engineering experience.
  • Current United States citizenship required
Preferred Qualifications
  • A minimum of 3 years of developmental experience such as practical work experience in relevant types of engineering such as systems startup, field engineering, or plant operations / maintenance in large industrial plants, utilities, process plants or other engineering/construction firms.
  • Technical knowledge of engineering systems, engineering calculations, applications of engineering methods and construction methods and materials, and application of computer aided engineering (CAE)/computer aided design (CAD) tools to engineering problems.
  • Working knowledge of major industry or regulatory standards and design criteria pertinent to the mechanical engineering discipline.
  • Multi-disciplinary experience (electrical engineering, mechatronics, control systems, etc.) is a plus.
  • Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
  • Participates in and fosters a work environment that is based upon openness, trust,  communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.
