An exciting career opportunity exists for an experienced engineering supervisor at the National Full-Scale Aerodynamics Complex (NFAC), home of the largest wind tunnels in the world.

This opportunity is being offered by National Aerospace Solutions, LLC, the team selected by the U.S. Air Force’s Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC) via the Test Operations and Sustainment (TOS) contract. AEDC’s mission is to conduct developmental test and evaluation for the Nation through modeling, simulation, ground test and flight test.  Execution of the mission requires a large team of highly qualified and dedicated professionals from multiple technical disciplines to effectively accomplish the objectives of our test customers.

The NFAC team performs large-scale, subsonic wind tunnel testing furthering research and development for a broad array of test customers across the academic, scientific, commercial, and military aerospace sectors. Testing supports development of new and innovative helicopter and rotorcraft technologies including future Urban Air Mobility applications, recurring Mars lander parachute qualification testing, improvements to fuel efficiency on full-scale tractor-trailer trucks, advanced fixed-wing aircraft applications (some with live jet engines), and many other exciting applications for the military and commercial sectors.

 Job Summary
This position is a combination supervisor and technical engineer role. The candidate will supervise a team of Electrical and Controls Engineers and a Reliability Engineer to support troubleshooting, sustainment and maintenance of high-power electrical machinery and control systems in order to achieve reliable wind tunnel facility operations. The candidate will also lead NFAC facility electrical engineering repair and refurbishment projects as an experienced electrical engineer.
Job Duties
  • Lead a team of Electrical and Controls Engineers along with a Reliability Engineer to support troubleshooting, repair, refurbishment and operation of facility high-power motors, transformers, switch gear, protective relays, MG sets, and control systems
  • Act as technical point of contact for facility electrical and controls engineering issues
  • Act as lead project engineer on facility electrical component repair and sustainment projects
  • Ensure proper development of requirements, schedules, budget estimates and statements of work for facility repair and refurbishment projects
  • Lead operations and maintenance planning meetings as required to support test and maintenance efforts.
  • Ensure project leaders develop and maintain system documentation and perform necessary configuration management using established NFAC change control process
  • Work with Branch Manager and Project Controls to prepare annual budget for the group. Develop project goals for upcoming FY. Oversee Electrical & Controls Engineering Group annual budget
  • Oversee the maintenance and reliability program to insure adherence to asset management best practices. Support troubleshooting and repair of facility assets as necessary
  • Foster a strong safety culture amongst team members to sustain an injury and incident free workplace
  • Ensure group members receive appropriate workplace safety training as required.
  • Performs and manages the work in accordance with relevant NAS and TOS procedures and AEDC standards and requirements including national consensus codes and federal requirements
  • Perform supervisor administrative duties such as time sheet approval, etc.
  • Review group member’s performance and write annual reviews
  • It is a condition of employment to wear company issued Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in accordance with supervisory direction and company policy.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  Basic Qualifications:
  • B.S. degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university and 7 to 12 years progressive and relevant experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years of developmental experience such as practical work experience on high power transformers, switchgear, protective relays, motors, generators.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  Preferred Qualifications:
  • Relevant electrical engineering experience troubleshooting, diagnosing, testing and measuring systems, field engineering, or plant operation in large industrial plants, utilities, process plants, etc.
  • Strong technical knowledge and experience working with high power electrical systems, relevant electrical engineering calculations, use of diagnostic and testing equipment (MCE, MCA, Megger, Power Factor, PI, Doble, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of high-power rotating machinery and electrical plant reliability.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills are required.
  • Experience working on high-power transmission, switch gear, protective relays, control systems and rotating machinery in a wind tunnel testing environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with a desire to lead
  • Prior experience/familiarity in ground test/maintenance process or complex industrial operations
  • Professional Society involvement and certifications (PE, PMP, CMRP, etc.)
