This opportunity is being offered by National Aerospace Solutions, the team selected by the U.S. Air Force to conduct Test and Operations Sustainment at the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC), Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee.  AEDC operates more than 55 aerodynamic and propulsion wind tunnels, rocket and turbine engine test cells, space environmental chambers, arc heaters, ballistic ranges and other specialized units located in six states. Many of the complex's test units have capabilities unmatched elsewhere in the United States; some are unique in the world. AEDC is one of three installations which are part of the Air Force Test Center (AFTC), one of six subordinate commands of the Air Force Materiel Command organization and an important national resource.

AEDC’s mission is to conduct developmental test and evaluation for the Nation through modeling, simulation, ground, and flight test.  Execution of the mission requires a large team of highly qualified and dedicated professionals from multiple technical disciplines to effectively accomplish the objectives of our test customers.

NAS currently has an exciting opportunity available for an Engineering Designer, with piping and process system experience, to join our team in Tullahoma, TN.

Job Summary:
This Engineering Designer will have experience with production of PFDs, P&IDs, piping and equipment layouts, and material takeoffs through all stages of Design.  The Designer works with other Designers and Engineers to take high level requirements and produce concepts, and develop those concepts through the preliminary and detailed design phases.  The Designer will also support construction and installation activities, including performing walk downs, taking field measurements, and producing as-built drawings.

Job Duties:
Performs non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity.  Such assignments that are typically parts of broader assignments, are screened to eliminate unusual design problems. Receives technical advice from supervisor or engineer. Work is reviewed for technical adequacy or conformity with instructions. May be assisted by lower level drafters and have frequent contact with professionals and others within the project. 

Typical assignments may include:
  • Develop or review designs by extracting and analyzing a variety of engineering data, applying conventional engineering practices to develop, prepare, or recommend schematics, designs, specifications, and parts lists.
  • Generate complex 2-D drawings or 3-D CAD design models with minimal guidance from others.
  • Perform design tasks having some degree of complexity
  • Prepare portions of 3-D CAD design model under the supervision of experienced designers.
  • Review and check calculations, design models, drawings and design documents prepared by others in the group and by material suppliers, as assigned.
  • Prepare bulk material quantity takeoffs and material requisitions for materials applicable to the group.
  • Work with engineers and other designers in the overall assignment to coordinate designs.
  • Compile, maintain and access job drawing files, records, and drawing controls, as instructed.

  • It is a condition of employment to wear company issued PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) in accordance with supervisory direction and company policy.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Vocational school training/certification comprising at least two semesters or two years of college with courses relevant to drafting and/or design plus a minimum of six years of extensive drawing and drafting experience.
  • US Citizenship is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Sound knowledge of CAD design and drafting techniques, engineering drawing, graphic arts, reading of drawings and reproduction methods used by the group.
  • Experienced in producing P&IDs and process system schematics, and developing Bills of Materials
  • Familiar with ASME B31.3 and B31.1
  • Basic computer skills such as use of Microsoft Office products, file naming, and computer folder structures.
  • Experience working with construction and supporting installation activities
  • Experience with Autodesk software, particularly AutoCAD and Inventor
  • Current or prior government security clearance
