This opportunity is being offered by National Aerospace Solutions, the team selected by the U.S. Air Force to conduct Test and Operations Sustainment at the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC), Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee.  National Aerospace Solutions is a limited liability company comprised of Bechtel National Inc. (as lead company) and Sierra Lobo Inc. with teaming Subcontractors nLogic Inc. and Chugach Federal Solutions Inc. AEDC operates more than 55 aerodynamic and propulsion wind tunnels, rocket and turbine engine test cells, space environmental chambers, arc heaters, ballistic ranges and other specialized units located in six states. Many of the complex's test units have capabilities unmatched elsewhere in the United States; some are unique in the world. AEDC is one of three installations which are part of the Air Force Test Center (AFTC), one of six subordinate commands of the Air Force Materiel Command organization and an important national resource.

AEDC’s mission is to conduct developmental test and evaluation for the Nation through modeling, simulation, ground, and flight test.  Execution of the mission requires a large team of highly qualified and dedicated professionals from multiple technical disciplines to effectively accomplish the objectives of our test customers.

Job Summary:
We are looking for experienced Mechanical Design Engineers who are interested in being a part of a multi-disciplinary team responsible for supporting test, maintenance, and capital investment projects at Arnold Air Force Base, TN. The engineers hired into these roles will independently perform complex design and analysis tasks, check design packages, interface with vendors, lead design reviews, and mentor less experienced engineers.  The engineer will also coordinate with multiple disciplines and departments on the project, and across the complex.

Job Duties:
Specific opportunities exist in the mechanical design focus areas listed below.  The engineer may work in one focus area, or may support all three.

Machine Design: Develop designs for models, mechanisms, heat transfer components, and/or material handling systems. Provide thermal, stress, or other analysis to support the proposed design.  This will include working closely with designers to produce 3D CAD models, close coordination with the manufacturing team to ensure economic and feasible designs, production of fabrication and installation drawings, and preparation of supporting calculations. 

Process Systems: Develop designs for mass and heat transfer systems including steam, air, hydraulics, coolants, evacuation systems, pumps, and heat exchangers. Provide hydraulic, thermal, or other analysis to support the proposed design. This will include development of P&IDs and layout drawings, development of procurement packages to support procurement of mechanical and process equipment, and preparation of supporting calculations.

Piping Design: Develop designs for new small and large bore piping systems and provide flexibility, thermal, or structural analysis to support the proposed design.  This will include development of stress and fatigue analysis for piping systems, design of piping supports and preparation of calculations, and review of specifications, drawings and vendor equipment documentation to ensure alignment with design.

Basic Qualifications:
  • B.S. degree in mechanical, aerospace, or chemical engineering from an accredited college or university plus a minimum of 5 to 7 years of progressive and relevant experience.
  • Current United States citizenship is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Active DoD Security Clearance
  • Experience with the design of complete process systems including pumps, valves, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, or other related equipment.
  • Experience developing procurement specifications for process hardware and systems.
  • Experienced in application of discipline specific codes  (i.e., ASME B31.3, B31.1, BPVC, Y14.5)
  • Experienced user with discipline specific software packages (e.g., AFT, Ceasar II, ANSYS, Autodesk Inventor/AutoCAD/Plant 3D)
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in ASME B31.3 piping design.
