2023 Summer Intern Opportunities for Computer Engineers and Computer Scientists
This opportunity is being offered by National Aerospace Solutions (NAS), the team selected by the U.S. Air Force to conduct Test and Operations Sustainment at the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC), Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee.  AEDC operates more than 55 aerodynamic and propulsion wind tunnels, rocket and turbine engine test cells, space environmental chambers, arc heaters, ballistic ranges and other specialized units located in six states. Many of the complex's test units have capabilities unmatched elsewhere in the United States; some are unique in the world. AEDC is one of three installations which are part of the Air Force Test Center (AFTC), one of six subordinate commands of the Air Force Materiel Command organization and an important national resource.

NAS is responsible for the design, operation, and maintenance of the infrastructure required to test flight, defense, and aerospace systems in the test facilities at AEDC. This infrastructure includes electric motors, compressors, hydraulic systems, refrigeration systems, heaters, dryers, power systems, measurement and data acquisition systems, control systems, and more.  We do not design or conduct analysis of the vehicles; we design, operation, and maintain the systems which enable ground test of models and subassemblies here at Arnold Air Force Base to provide our customers with the data they need to make decisions on design and flight-worthiness.

The NAS Internship Program offers 10-12 week full time summer internship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in engineering and computer science. As part of the internship, you are paired with experienced engineers and scientists who serve as your mentor(s) in completing assigned projects gaining valuable experience in your field of study while contributing to Air Force and NAS missions. You will be required to present a briefing to senior management on work accomplished, lessons learned, and further recommended actions.

Our internship is structured such that you are assigned multiple tasks to complete throughout the summer to provide exposure to the variety of types of work and mission areas available here at AEDC. These are real engineering/technical assignments that need to be completed, not busy work to keep you occupied.

Examples of types of tasks interns have worked include: (these are examples, not an exhaustive list):
  • Develop and add post-processing functions to CFD simulations
  • Develop or modify existing software simulations of physical processes
  • Create data diagnostic application in Python
  • Research and develop scripting processes and procedures for automating system administration tasks
  • Convert current graphical user interface programs to run on both Windows and Linux operating systems
  • Research, develop a design and recommendation for new authentication method for data acquisition display systems
  • Update code to newer versions of Python to improve performance, security, maintainability and facilitate further development
  • Update code to execute in differing hardware/software environments
  • Debug and make enhancements to in-house developed LABVIEW software application for test facility control systems and document findings
  • Prototype software algorithms to interface with data acquisition system hardware
  • Refine data acquisition software algorithms to improve efficiency of code execution and reduce time required to execute select functionality
  • Develop utilities to convert files from one type to another
  • Develop software utilities to streamline test operations and documentation processes
  • Develop or modify data display and/or graphical user interface software applications for use in data acquisition or control applications
  • Develop or modify web-based applications for data analysis and display

Minimum requirements for consideration:
  • Resumes must include degree program, projected graduation date, and GPA in order to be considered.
  • Must be currently enrolled in university and pursuing a degree in computer engineering or computer science from an accredited college or university.
  • Satisfactory completion of at least one year of study as a full-time student in one of the above listed disciplines at the time the internship begins. Graduate students are also welcome to apply.
  • Minimum GPA of 2.75
  • Ability to work 40 hours each week for 10 to 12 weeks from May to August. This is a full time position.
  • Must have reliable transportation to transport oneself from building to building within the industrial complex
  • Must be a U.S. citizen

Preferred qualifications
  • Positive attitude and willingness to receive feedback
  • Self-driven with the ability to seek out requirements with minimal direction
  • Demonstrated intellectual curiosity
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively
  • Desire to work on a team with energy and commitment to the work assigned
  • Adaptable and willing to stretch technically and learn new things
  • Interest in supporting our nation’s defense
Interested and qualified students should apply at https://nascareers.catsone.com/careers/ by uploading a current resume – pdf files work best; .doc and .docx files are also acceptable.
