This opportunity is being offered by National Aerospace Solutions, the team selected by the U.S. Air Force to conduct Test and Operations Sustainment at the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC). National Aerospace Solutions is a limited liability company comprised of Bechtel National Inc. (as lead company) and Sierra Lobo Inc. with teaming Subcontractors nLogic Inc. and Chugach Federal Solutions Inc.

Work will be performed at the AEDC Hypervelocity Wind Tunnel No. 9 (Tunnel 9) located in Silver Spring, Maryland. Tunnel 9 provides aerodynamic simulation critical to hypersonic system development and hypersonic vehicle technologies at speeds from Mach 7 to Mach 18, a capability unmatched anywhere in the United States

Job Summary:
The Senior Electrical Engineer will provide oversite of a small team of electrical engineers and technicians responsible for the facility data and instrumentation system, control system and electrical distribution system required to operate a wind tunnel facility. The team lead is responsible for providing technical direction to a team of electrical engineers, coordinating electrical work with facility project schedules, reporting technical/financial status of projects to management, and ensuring safe and reliable operation of electrical all subsystems.

Job Duties:
Specific tasks associated with this type of work include but are not limited to:
  • Provide technical guidance, leadership, and assignments to system engineers responsible for the AEDC Tunnel 9 data and instrumentation system, control system and electrical distribution system.
  • Ensure safe and reliable operation of the facility’s data and instrumentation system, control system and electrical distribution system.
  • Support troubleshooting and repair activities of the data and instrumentation system, control system and electrical distribution system.
  • Develop and review strategic requirements for advancement of hypersonic wind tunnel electrical systems.
  • Provide innovation and insight into enhancement and modernizations opportunities to improve data quality and efficiency.
  • Ensure data and instrumentation system, control system and electrical distribution system documentation is updated and maintained.
  • Review and approve Tunnel 9 electrical engineering designs, engineering analysis and system baseline hazard analyses to ensure requirements are satisfied.
  • Review and approve electrical subsystem standard operating procedures to ensure requirements are satisfied and safe operation of the facility.
  • Respond when systems malfunction during a test, troubleshooting and directive corrective maintenance activities (or calling in the appropriate systems engineer for additional support), ensuring a timely return to service.
  • Work with cross-functional teams such as system engineering, test operations, projects and administrative staff.
  • Excellent communication, documentation and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Conduct and write up system safety hazard analyses and write clear work instructions.
  • Participates in and fosters a work environment that is based upon openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.
  • It is a condition of employment to wear company issued PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) in accordance with supervisory direction and company policy.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Basic Qualifications:
  • B.S. degree in electrical engineering from a regionally accredited college or university and a minimum of seven (7) years of progressive and relevant engineering experience.
  • Current US Citizenship required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated skill in oral and written communication.
  • Good knowledge of major industry or regulatory standards (such as the National Electrical Code and IEEE standards) and design criteria pertinent to the electrical engineering discipline.
  • Educational and/or work experience in dealing with instrumentation, controls and/or electrical components of mechanical systems.
  • Professional engineering certification.
  • Experience writing Scope of Work documents.
