US Citizenship Required: Yes

This opportunity is being offered by National Aerospace Solutions, the team selected by the U.S. Air Force to conduct Test and Operations Sustainment at the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC), Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee.  National Aerospace Solutions is a limited liability company comprised of Bechtel National Inc. (as lead company) and Sierra Lobo Inc. with teaming Subcontractors nLogic Inc. and Chugach Federal Solutions Inc. AEDC operates more than 55 aerodynamic and propulsion wind tunnels, rocket and turbine engine test cells, space environmental chambers, arc heaters, ballistic ranges and other specialized units located in six states. Many of the complex's test units have capabilities unmatched elsewhere in the United States; some are unique in the world. AEDC is one of three installations which are part of the Air Force Test Center (AFTC), one of six subordinate commands of the Air Force Materiel Command organization and an important national resource.

AEDC’s mission is to conduct developmental test and evaluation for the Nation through modeling, simulation, ground, and flight test.  Execution of the mission requires a large team of highly qualified and dedicated professionals from multiple technical disciplines to effectively accomplish the objectives of our test customers.

As part of the advanced technology group, the successful candidate will be part of the team charged with making non-intrusive measurements including temperature, pressure, flow rates and species in flows and on surfaces associated within the AEDC ground test infrastructure.

The successful applicant will solve problems, broad in scope, addressing realistic test measurement needs making practical application of non-intrusive physics-based instruments, optical/electronic systems, and helping to integrate those systems into test operations. The work in making such measurements often involves continual diagnostic techniques developments to meet a wide range of measurement needs.  Measurements can move from laboratory to eventually large facilities operating at high energy levels in harsh environments often associated with aerospace ground test facilities.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to work in a team with and across multiple disciples.  The successful candidate will seek to understand why and what measurements are needed and help develop approaches to meets those needs.

The diagnostic techniques often apply basic research in physics and engineering principles into practical techniques applied in harsh environments.  We make measurements in subsonic to hypersonic and space environment regimes.

Job Duties:
  • Support the research and development of advanced non-intrusive diagnostic test techniques.
  • Work with engineers, physicists, and optical engineers and skilled craft workforce to develop operable measurements systems.
  • Develop documentation of designs and operational systems/measurement techniques including risk assessments, work instructions and procedures.
  • Conduct literature reviews, prepare and review engineering reports, papers, equipment specifications and develop mathematical/engineering calculations.
  • Responsible for submitting equipment requirements in a timely fashion to ensure continuity of operations and new developments.
  • It is a condition of employment to wear company issued PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) in accordance with supervisory direction and company policy.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

  • Basic skills in oral and written communication are required.
  • Current U.S. Citizenship required.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree(s) and/or practical work experience in areas such as photo optical engineering/imaging, light/laser based measurements and diagnostics: radiometry and spectroscopy, and chemical species diagnostics.
  • Documented technical work/  knowledge of optical diagnostics systems, measurement systems and theory, engineering systems, engineering calculations, applications of engineering methods and reporting of results.
  • Experience with supersonic and hypersonic ground test facilities and air breathing and rocket system testing
  • Demonstrated  experience with implementation of advanced diagnostic techniques such as CARS (Coherent anti-Stokes Raman Scattering), BOS (Background Oriented Schlieren), LIF (Laser-Induced Fluorescence) and PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) or similar systems within ground aerospace test facilities
  • Experience using Class 4 continuous wave and pulsed lasers, solid state, dye and gas lasers is highly desired.
  • Experience with software such as MATLAB, LabVIEW, Python, ANSYS Workbench, and Microsoft office suite is desirable.
  • Useful skills include systems engineering, design principles, data analysis, radiation and optical physics, measurement technologies, and supersonic and hypersonic facilities systems.
