National Aerospace Solutions (NAS), LLC is the team selected by the U.S. Air Force (USAF) to conduct Test and Operations Sustainment activities at the Arnold Engineering Development Complex, Arnold Air Force Base, in Tullahoma, Tennessee. Job Duties:
  • Evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering methods, techniques, procedures and criteria, using independent judgment in making adaptations and modifications. 
  • Perform assignments, which have clear and specific objectives and require the investigation of a limited number of variables for plant operations engineering; supports the use of common work processes and procedures within plant operations engineering across the TOS contract.
  • Act as a point of contact for plant operations in support of assigned test cells.Tasks within this function include:
    • Support of a SOC for a proposed test program, to include manhours required to support air-on activities, and resources required to run the plant to support the test program.
    • Respond to questions regarding plant capabilities in support of a test program.
    • Provide specific test instructions for the various test periods in a program.
    • Provide equipment schedules for each test period in a program.
    • Provide Operational Work Instructions for each test in a program.
    • Assist in coordinating any special security requirements in support of a test program.
    • Provide technical direction on multiple shifts for plant operations during the test periods.The test schedule changes throughout the year; therefore, hours of required support will change.Support could be on first or second shift (shifts could be 12 hours in length).
    • Assist tracking and ensure the use of qualified operators during a test program.
  • Act as a point of contact for an assigned area of the ETF Plant.Tasks within this function include:
    • Tracking project work (maintenance and capital improvement) within the area to ensure required outages do not impact the ability of the plant to support scheduled testing.
    • Coordinate plant check-outs in support of maintenance and capital improvement projects.
    • Provide test instructions, Operational Work Instructions, and checkout plans for assigned plant check-outs.
    • Prepare and update Operational Work Instructions for systems within assigned area of the plant.
    • Act as a qualified evaluator within the Workforce Qualification process.
    • Help track assignment of qualified operators and generate workforce qualification deviations when required.
  • Perform work, generally within plant operations engineering, which involves the preparation, interpretation or review of calculations, specifications, plans, investigations, surveys, structures, systems or equipment with relatively few complex features.
  • Participate in one or more of the following:
    • Equipment design and development
    • System design, including concept sketches and layouts
    • Testing of materials,
    • Preparation of specifications and design calculations,
    • Preparing designs, drawings and data under the supervision of a more experienced engineer,
    • Preparation of engineering studies and reports,
    • Preparation of material quantity estimates,
    • Uses engineering computer aided design/computer aided engineering (CAD/CAE) tools
    • Participate in incident investigations
    • Fitness for service evaluations
  • Draft letters for replies to vendor correspondence.
  • Monitor schedule for own work.
  • Review design documents of equipment manufacturers or subcontractors of a low to moderate degree of complexity, and prepare comments and recommendations.
  • It is a condition of employment to wear company issued PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) in accordance with supervisory direction and company policy.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Basic Qualifications:
  • B.S. degree in applicable engineering discipline from an accredited university and a minimum of 3 – 6 years of progressive and relevant engineering experience. Basic skill in oral and written communication.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Basic technical knowledge of engineering systems, engineering calculations, applications of engineering methods and construction methods and materials, and application of computer aided engineering (CAE)/computer aided design (CAD) tools to engineering problems.
  • Developmental experience such as practical work experience in design engineering or other relevant types of engineering such as systems startup, field engineering, or plant operation in large industrial plants, utilities, process plants or other engineering/construction firms.
  • Familiarity with turbine and rocket test cells, wind tunnels, space chambers, and/or arc heater facilities is desirable.The systems and environment at AEDC are varied from high velocity pressurized wind tunnels to vacuum chambers.Process systems include 4,000 psig air, steam, cryogenic helium, liquid nitrogen, flammable gases and liquids, high temperature service over 1,300 F, and utilities.
