National Aerospace Solutions is contracted by the United States Air Force to operate and maintain the world’s largest wind tunnel at NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, CA.  The National Full-Scale Aerodynamics Complex provides the United States with the capability of performing ground-based aerodynamic and acoustic experiments at speeds from static to nearly 350mph on large-scale and full-scale aerospace vehicles and components.  This complex includes a 40- by 80-foot Wind Tunnel, and an 80- by 120-foot Wind Tunnel. 

Job Summary:
This is a lead role supervising a group of engineers who, as Test Directors, plan and conduct wind tunnel test programs at the National Full-Scale Aerodynamics Complex. The Test Directors in the Test Engineering Group are responsible for all aspects of the test program including establishing test objectives and creating a test plan in conjunction with the test customer, building a test team of engineers, technicians and mechanics, developing and maintaining a test schedule and budget, overseeing test safety reviews and test readiness reviews, managing test article installation and checkout activities, and directing wind tunnel operation.  Members of the group are also responsible for performing data analysis during the test and capturing the results in the form of periodic Quick Look Reports and a final Technical Report upon conclusion of the test. Test Engineering Group Supervisor will manage, mentor and direct the activities of the Test Directors and Data Analysts in the group.

Job Duties:
  • Manage group assignments for all test programs, track progress and help eliminate roadblocks. Be a sounding board for addressing concerns and troubleshooting problems.
  • Assure tests are planned and conducted according to established Air Force instructions for ground based testing.
  • Oversee/facilitate both technical and administrative training.
  • Mentor new and uncertified Test Directors, ensure they are provided with the necessary tools and training to fulfill their responsibilities, and audit test progress to ensure safety standards and best practices are followed.
  • Interface with test customer representatives to ensure test objectives are being met.
  • Act as backup Test Director when necessary to cover lead Test Director absences.
  • Oversee test data analysis and reporting duties of the Data Analysts and ensure test reporting milestones are met.
  • Organize and lead periodic internal status briefings to government and contractor management and aid in financial planning with periodic labor forecasts for test projects.
  • Perform basic administrative duties, such as approving purchase requests, time cards, and vacation requests.
  • Track employee progress toward established goals. Prepare and submit annual performance reviews for members of the group.
  • Encourage project management discipline within the group. Ensure proper development of requirements, schedules, budget estimates, and test plans for NFAC tests. Ensure Test Directors develop and maintain appropriate test documentation and perform necessary test configuration management.
  • Be a strong safety advocate for the group. Commit to fostering and sustaining an injury and incident free workplace.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
 
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in aerospace or mechanical engineering from an accredited engineering program with 9 – 10 years of progressive and relevant experience conducting experimental investigations in aerospace test facilities and/or supervising engineers in a team environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, strong written and oral communications skills and confident leading large multi-disciplined test teams.
  • Ability to develop a fundamental understanding of a wide variety of customer research requirements in order to guide the test approach towards successful conclusion.
  • An emphasis on continual professional development is expected.
  • Limited travel is expected (~5%).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master of Science degree or post-graduate coursework in aerospace or mechanical engineering from an accredited engineering program with 10+ years of progressive and relevant experience conducting experimental investigations in aerospace test facilities.
  • Solid aerodynamics background, expertise in experimental techniques, and wind tunnel testing experience.
