The Opportunity:

An exciting career opportunity exists for an experienced Data Systems Engineer with primary responsibility for upgrading and maintaining a complex data acquisition system and supervising a team of Instrumentation and Software Engineers, Data System Technicians, and Data Analysts.
 
This opportunity is being offered by National Aerospace Solutions, LLC, the team selected by the U.S. Air Force to conduct Test Operations and Sustainment at the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC), National Full-scale Aerodynamics Complex (NFAC) at Moffett Field, CA. The NFAC provides the United States with the capability of performing ground-based aerodynamic and acoustic experiments at speeds from static to nearly 350mph on large-scale and full-scale aerospace vehicles and components.  This complex includes a 40- by 80-foot Wind Tunnel and an 80- by 120-foot Wind Tunnel.
 
AEDC’s mission is to conduct developmental test and evaluation for the Nation through modeling, simulation, ground test and flight test.  Execution of the mission requires a large team of highly qualified and dedicated professionals from multiple technical disciplines to effectively accomplish the objectives of our test customers.

Job Duties:
The Test Data Systems Engineer Supervisor role is critical to the execution of the NFAC test mission.  Specifically, duties for this position include:
  • Interfacing with test customers to establish test requirements for the instrumentation and data system, working closely with Test Engineers.
  • Identifying required data system improvements, and coordinate upgrade and checkout activities.
  • Coordinating activities to prepare and check-out instrumentation and data systems to support tests in the NFAC.
  • Overseeing the analysis and verification of test data and subsequent data report generation.
  • Developing and leading a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and data system support staff.
  • Coordinating staff work assignments, tracking progress and helping eliminate roadblocks.
  • Ensuring Instrumentation and Software Engineers develop and maintain system documentation and perform appropriate configuration management.
  • Assessing group needs and coordinating group resources to optimize efficiency and productivity.
  • Overseeing Data System Engineering Group annual budget.
  • Fostering a strong safety culture amongst team members to sustain an injury and incident free workplace.
  • Participating in and fostering a work environment that is based upon openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and job satisfaction.
  • Being a sounding board for addressing instrumentation and data system concerns and troubleshooting problems.
  • Developing process and procedure documentation as required.
  • Ensuring clear goals and expectations are communicated and followed within the team.
  • Reviewing performance and writing annual reviews for staff.
  • It is a condition of employment to wear company issued PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) in accordance with supervisory direction and company policy.
  • Performing other related duties as required.
Basic Qualifications:
  • A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or aerospace engineering from an accredited college or university (ABET accreditation preferred) plus 10 years of progressive and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability as evidenced by prior work experience, including skills for directing and motivating a multidisciplinary staff of technicians and engineers.
  • Good familiarity with general instrumentation equipment & practices standard to the instrumentation industry.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • The working environment is highly dynamic and will require managing several different projects simultaneously.
  • Must have the ability to be technically conversant with experts in the fields of instrumentation, data acquisition, and process controls.
Preferred qualifications: 
  • Technical competence and at least 10 years’ practical experience in instrumentation or controls engineering in support of major test facilities or heavy industry.
  • Post-graduate education in engineering or business management/administration will be helpful, but not required.
  • Working knowledge of safety, security, environmental and quality procedures and requirements for instrumentation systems.
  • General knowledge of configuration management principles.
