Job Title:  Mid-Level Electrical Systems Engineers

Job Duties:
  • Evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering methods, techniques, procedures and criteria, using independent judgment in making adaptations and modifications.
  • Perform assignments, which have clear and specific objectives and require the investigation of a limited number of variables for Electrical Engineering.
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and execution of common work processes and procedures within electrical engineering across the TOS contract.
  • Perform work, generally within one discipline, which involves the preparation, interpretation or review of calculations, specifications, plans, investigations, surveys, structures, systems or equipment with relatively few complex features; supports electrical engineering with deploying and adhering to common engineering work processes throughout the TOS contract.
  • Participate in the following engineering tasks to varying degrees at various times, dependent on the specific job assignment:
    • Collect and / or derive systems requirements from various stakeholders, performing gap analyses on existing systems and / or proposing new systems
    • Design and development of equipment or systems of equipment, including concept sketches and layouts, using computer aided design/computer aided engineering (CAD/CAE) tools
    • Modify existing designs to accommodate as-built changes, increases in system capability, or changing systems requirements
    • Prepare specifications and design calculations, using various software and spreadsheet tools
    • Review and check detailed design drawings and data provided by other engineers, suppliers, clients, or test customers
    • Provide systems installation engineering including detailed installation and checkout instructions
    • Prepare systems safety hazard analyses and verification of required mitigation measures
    • Prepare or review of engineering studies and reports
    • Prepare or review material and labor estimates
    • Generate detailed operations and maintenance work instructions, guidelines, procedures, and checklists
    • Develop and maintain an effective preventive maintenance and asset management program for systems for which the engineer is responsible. This includes collection, analysis, and reporting of system performance data
    • Interface with Instrumentation, Data, and Control (ID&C) engineers; test and plant operations engineers; design engineers; facility analysis engineers; reliability engineers; project engineers and project managers; safety and environmental engineers; craft supervision and planners / schedulers; and other disciplines to ensure that the systems they are responsible for are ready to run properly when required and that maintenance outages are planned, coordinated, and properly scheduled.
    • Provide technical guidance to craft personnel in setup, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and removal of systems
    • Develop and present technical training to craft personnel and other engineers
    • Participate in incident investigations and root-cause analyses
    • Serve on committees formed for specific tasks
    • Present and communicate technical systems information to NAS management, AF client, and test customers
    • Other related duties as required
  • Prepare letters for replies to vendor correspondence.
  • Monitor schedule within discipline. Assist in preparation of forecasts, quantity take-offs and change orders.
  • Review design documents of equipment manufacturers or subcontractors of a moderate to advanced degree of complexity, and prepares comments and recommendations.
  • It is a condition of employment to wear company issued PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) in accordance with supervisory direction and company policy.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Basic Qualifications:
  • B.S. degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university plus 8 to 15 years of progressive and relevant related experience.
  • Educational concentration and / or work experience in low, medium, or high voltage power distribution.

  • Technical knowledge of engineering systems, engineering calculations, applications of engineering methods and construction methods and materials, and application of computer aided engineering (CAE)/computer aided design (CAD) tools to engineering problems.
  • Good knowledge of major industry or regulatory standards and design criteria pertinent to the Electrical Engineering discipline.
  • Basic skill in oral and written communication.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Educational or work experience with programmable logic controllers and automated process control.
  • A master’s degree or post-graduate coursework in a relevant field.
  • Developmental experience such as practical work experience in design engineering or other relevant types of engineering such as systems startup, field engineering, or plant operations / maintenance in large industrial plants, utilities, process plants or other engineering/construction firms.
  • Familiarity with turbine and rocket test cells, wind tunnels, space chambers, and/or arc heater facilities; or other industry product test facilities is desirable.  The systems and environment at AEDC are varied from high velocity pressurized wind tunnels to vacuum chambers.  Process systems include 4,000 psig air, steam, cryogenic helium, liquid nitrogen, flammable gases and liquids, high temperature service over 1,300 F, and various utilities including high, medium, and low voltage power.
