This opportunity is being offered by National Aerospace Solutions, the team selected by the U.S. Air Force to conduct Test and Operations Sustainment at the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC), Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee. National Aerospace Solutions is a limited liability company comprised of Bechtel National Inc. (as lead company) and Sierra Lobo Inc. with teaming Subcontractors nLogic Inc. and Chugach Federal Solutions Inc. AEDC operates more than 55 aerodynamic and propulsion wind tunnels, rocket and turbine engine test cells, space environmental chambers, arc heaters, ballistic ranges and other specialized units located in six states. Many of the complex's test units have capabilities unmatched elsewhere in the United States; some are unique in the world. AEDC is one of three installations which are part of the Air Force Test Center (AFTC), one of six subordinate commands of the Air Force Materiel Command organization and an important national resource.
We are looking for an Instrumentation and Controls Design Engineer who is interested in working on a multi-disciplinary team responsible for designing a new hypersonic test facility, which will play a key role in hypersonic system development for the United States Department of Defense, at Arnold Air Force Base, TN. The engineer hired into this role will coordinate across multiple departments on the project, from concept to commissioning, for this new facility.
Job Duties: Instrumentation and Controls Design Engineers design, evaluate, analyze, and assist in the fabrication and installation of process system instrumentation and controls system components. Instrumentation and controls design engineers work closely with test and system engineers in development of design requirements and ensuring proposed designs meet those requirements.
Some specific tasks associated with this type of work include (this is not an exhaustive list):
Perform assignments, which may require further definition of scope and objectives and require the investigation of a number of variables, for Instrumentation and Control System Engineering; supports the use of common work processes and procedures within assigned function.
Perform work, generally within Instrumentation and Control System Engineering, which involves the preparation, interpretation or review of calculations, drawings, specifications, plans, investigations, systems or equipment.
Participate in one or more of the following:
Interface with internal and/or external customers to ensure understanding of system and/or test requirements
Development of system requirements
Instrumentation and Data System design, development, and/or maintenance
Automated Control System design, development, and/or maintenance
Automated Control and Human Machine Interface (HMI) Software Development
Preparation of design calculations, engineering studies, and/or reports
Review of Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams for control and instrumentation requirements
Preparation of Logic Diagrams
Preparation of specifications or data sheets to support procurement of process instrumentation
Preparation of material quantity estimates
Review of vendor submittals and preparation of comments and recommendations
Technical review meetings and technical issue resolution

Basic Qualifications:
B.S. degree in electrical, mechanical, or chemical engineering from an accredited college or university plus a minimum of 3 to 7 years of progressive and relevant engineering experience.
Current US Citizenship required
Preferred Qualifications:
Progressive experience with control system theory and design concepts such as Controls Strategy and Algorithm Development, Math Modeling/Simulations, Calibration, Motion Controls, Process Controls, Process Instrumentation, Sequencing Systems, Stability & Control, Control Valve Selection and Design, Systems Safety, Networks & Field Busses, Control System Optimization, Learning and Rule-based Systems
Experience in the design or application of closed loop control systems
Experience in feedback control systems
Experience in the design of application of control systems using Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Distributed Control Systems (DCS), and Human Machine Interfaces (HMI)
Experience with proportional, integral, derivative (PID) control systems
Progressive experience with transducers, sensors, electrical circuits, signal processing, and data acquisition systems used to measure temperature, pressure, force, flow, acceleration, vibration, and other physical phenomena common to aerospace systems testing.
Experience in the design or application of sensors used to convert physical phenomenon into electrical signals
Experience in signal processing and analysis methodologies
Experience in analog and digital filtering methodologies
Experience in application of Analog-to-Digital and Digital-to-Analog conversion methodologies
Experience in the integration of sensors, signal conditioning, filtering, A/D conversion, etc. in the measurement of physical phenomenon
Experience in the development and/or application of Instrumentation and Data Acquisition software
Experience in the analysis of measurement uncertainty
Experience in the calibration of instrumentation
Progressive work experience in design engineering plus work experience in other areas of engineering such as systems startup, field engineering, or plant operation in large industrial plants, utilities, process plants or other engineering/construction firms.
Demonstrated skill in oral and written communication
Active Secret Security Clearance
